Recovered paper is a resource that is in great demand around the world and is becoming increasingly important. The level of demand will continue to rise in the years to come. The prices will be volatile with a general upward trend, while the quality of the recovered paper will decrease. Paper machines which fully exploit all the potential of the recovered paper fibres and can produce high-quality papers economically using fewer resources are in great demand.

Lower CO2 emissions – our commitment

As part of the European Commission’s Roadmap 2050, the paper industry has set itself an ambitious target: to create more added value while at the same time greatly reducing CO2 emissions. With the high-tech Propapier PM 2 machine, we achieved the breakthrough towards 2050: Next Fibre® papers save on average 52% CO2. With the Product Carbon Footprint for Next Board®, the corrugated boards made from Next Fibre®, TÜV Rheinland confirms a CO2 saving of up to 15%. Our approach has been to completely reconceive the notion of corrugated board.

Next Fibre® – Lightweights are reality

The PM2 paper machine produces lightweight containerboard with grammages of between 70 and 130 g/m². PM2 is our response to the high energy and raw material prices that we are seeing. The machine’s high-tech features enable Next Fibre® papers to be produced economically with lower grammages and less use of fibres.

With Next Fibre®, today a complete range of papers is available whose production saves the environment on average 52% CO₂. In addition, Next Fibre® is able to reduce CO₂ emissions during transport by up to 24%.

The new corrugated board generation: Slimmer, lighter, same performance

The Next Fibre® high-performance papers are used to manufacture the Next Board® corrugated boards. Thanks to newly developed corrugated board designs, Progroup has successfully managed to achieve higher ECT values as well as improved compressive strength with less use of materials.

The change to the height and width of the flutes and the radiuses of the wave shape in different combinations are the key to optimising performance. Smaller separations and lower heights of the flute make the “free clamping length” shorter, the number of support points increases, which in turn increases the durability.

In addition, this creates a largely flat paper surface which enables a clean, uniform printing result to be achieved. A disruptive ripple effect is effectively prevented.

The “Product Carbon Footprint” certification of TÜV Rheinland also confirms that Next Board® saves up to 15% CO₂ pollution in manufacturing compared to customary grades available in the market.

The new generation of CO₂-reduced packaging

Only Next Board® corrugated board is used at our selected production partners throughout Europe to create Next Box® packaging. What is the significance of the term carbon footprint in relation to the Next Generation Products?

Carbon footprint or the CO₂ assessment of a product is the sum total of all CO₂ emissions which occur during the course of its life phases. This assessment allows products to be compared in terms of their effect on the climate and also to be improved by assessing the individual production steps. Progroup has had a product carbon footprint prepared for its Next Board® corrugated board.

For which products has Progroup had a product carbon footprint prepared?

The PM2 paper machine in Eisenhüttenstadt enables fibre-saving production of high-quality containerboards. These Next Fibre® high-performance papers are the basis for lighter and yet strong corrugated boards with a new design, the Next Board® corrugated boards. They have been examined to determine their product-specific carbon footprint.

How much CO₂ can be saved during transport using Next Board®?

Next Board® corrugated boards weigh less and are thinner, which means that 16% more m² can be transported on each truck. However, each truck load is heavier overall due to the additional quantity. As more corrugated board can be transported on each truck, fewer trips are required overall to transport the same amount of corrugated board. 1 in 7 truck journeys can be saved.
